Wings and Wilderness: Birds and Landscapes of the Northeast
The Hyde Collection is partnering with the Museum of American Bird Art at Mass Audubon (MABA) on an exhibition that explores the birds and natural landscapes of the Northeast. The exhibition will feature approximately twenty works from The Hyde’s permanent collection and a similar number of works from MABA’s collection. The exhibition will highlight the landscapes of Upstate New York and surrounding areas and the birds that live in or migrate to those habitats.
Key works from The Hyde’s collection include depictions of the Adirondacks by Winslow Homer and Mary Walters, paintings of Lake George by William Hart and John Marin, and a series of three works by Willard Metcalf, showing a landscape in Connecticut at different times of year. The exhibition will explore why so many artists over the centuries have been drawn to the landscapes of the Northeast, including the painters of the Hudson River School, arguably the first purely American art movement. The Albany Institute of History and Art is lending a work by Hudson River School painter Thomas Cole to the exhibition.
MABA’s collection is currently off view as they construct a new museum facility in Concord, Massachusetts. This exhibition will allow visitors to The Hyde the unique opportunity to see a selection of the many remarkable works in MABA’s collection, including engravings by John Audubon, a silkscreen by Andy Warhol, bird miniatures by A. Elmer Crowell, and works by Indigenous artists Philip Young and Kananginak Pootoogook. The exhibition features a range of traditional and contemporary works of photography, painting, and sculpture representing numerous species native to the Northeast, including recent acquisitions by MABA, on view for the first time.
